Some moments are burned into my brain, a memory that I could never erase. My first day in Labuan Bajo I was walking down this beach at sunset when I saw a father and son come around the bend in a handmade wooden boat. Immediately two younger boys ran out to greet them. Everyone was overjoyed, happiness was bursting out of them like a bright light in a tunnel. In one of the most economically poor cities I have ever been to, here stood a family with more wealth than any I have ever encountered in my life. There home had no windows, and their feet had no shoes, but they had hearts so full that I couldn't help but wonder to myself "Is there anything in this world that they don't have that they want?" The father smiled as he shook my hand, teeth missing, hands worn from years of pulling lines in saltwater. Have we forgotten that nothing is more important than returning home after a day at sea to the ones we love and who love us.
